Chartres Street at St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square, the lively heart of the French Quarter, is normally a bustling colony of tourists, artists, jugglers, magicians, fortune tellers and live music from street brass bands. But when Deborah Abbott took this photo, it was utterly deserted at 9 a.m. on an unseasonably wintry day in January, with temperatures in the 30s and winds of 15 knots.

Never would have thought it was in the 30s in this photo. Love early morning urban shots, even though I seldom am up to capture them.
Evidently the folks don't come out to play until much later. When I was there late August 2004, there was almost no one in the square before about noon, at which time artists set up along the fences. I've really enjoyed yours and Deborah's pictures. I also just finished reading "Chasing the Rising Sun" by AP reporter Ted Anthony - fascinating book!
