Geranium buds

GERANIUM BUDS, GREEN, MICHIGAN, JULY 11, 2013

Pentax K-01
90mm Tamron macro
1/180 sec. f16
ISO 1600

The K-01 and Tamron combination has become my go-to kit for macrophotography. The actual size of this cluster of buds is about that of a silver dollar.

Loon chick No. 2

COMMON LOONS, SYLVANIA WILDERNESS, MICHIGAN, JULY 2, 2013

Nikon Coolpix S8200
Nikkor lens at 63mm
1/800 sec. f12
ISO 1600

It amazes me how inexpensive point-and-shoot digital cameras have improved in image quality over the years. Deborah Abbott used a little Nikon to capture this loon chick and its parent on a lake in the Sylvania Wilderness near Watersmeet, Michigan.

Busted

WHITETAIL DEER, GREEN, MICHIGAN, JUNE 30, 2013

Bushnell game camera
Sunpak 7.45mm
1/18 sec. f?? with flash
ISO 100

We'd suspected a deer was raiding our bird feeders at night for a couple of weeks, so set up our inexpensive ($100) game camera on a tripod to nail the malefactor in the act. At the proper distance (about 8 feet) the flash is strong enough for the camera to yield a surprisingly sharp and clear photograph. This was taken at 10:33 p.m. June 30, but the deer returned at 1:30 a.m. and again at 4:30 a.m. July 1 to make sure it had not left behind any swag.
